ARTIST STATEMENT

Hands can be calm and capable, capture care, compassion or cruelty, send messages of hope and despair. They express trust, respect, strength, power and protection, generosity, hospitality and stability.

They convey an essence of comfort and soul when included in phrases like 'give us a hand', hand crafted, hand held, hands of the land, hand tooled, hand sculpted, hand drawn and hand written.

My work is motivated by social and environmental concerns and feeling anxious about politics and climate change, I decided to re-purpose cotton gloves to commemorate characteristics and signals that they collectively captivate. Dyeing some with indigo which symbolically represents justice and fairness and wrapping the rope in red associated with energy, power, war and danger, I clasp my hands.
