Working primarily in sculpture and installation, my practice is located at the convergence of identity and memory, playing with presence and absence to explore accepted historical narratives. Emerging from my own explorations of elusive familial and cultural histories my practice often considers strategies for masking, concealment and control. Contrary to the usual rhetoric of ‘exploration’ and ‘discovery’, the complex and nuanced interactions between settler and Indigenous cultures are inescapably entwined with the mapping and ‘settlement’ of Australia. This work considers some of our veiled history.
